In 1985 I had a psychotic break and suddenly withdrew from Oberlin College. I received extraordinary care at Harding Hospital in Worthington, Ohio where I worked closely with Dr. Randy Rae Beem and his team to recover my mind and rediscover my humanity.
Sadly, inpatient care like I received in 1985 is rarely covered by insurance today, whereas mine was paid in full by my mother’s employment-based policy. Yet mental health problems among college students are at an all time high.
As one who was privileged to receive the best care that psychiatry had to offer, return to college, and live up to my full potential, I want the same for all college students who struggle with their mental health. To that end, I created a scholarship fund for students at The University of Nevada, Reno who are balancing their studies with challenges to their mental health. Please consider donating any amount!
